Define Tax Rates

The Tax/Fee section lets you define detailed tax rates for a tax profile.

  1. In the Tax/Fee section, enter a name for the imposition in Tax / Fee Name.

The imposition is the agency that imposes the tax, for example State Sales Tax, City Sales Tax, PST, GST, HST, or Bottle Deposit.

  2. Enter the text to display on the receipt in Receipt Text, for example Sales Tax.

  3. If you want the tax to show on the receipt even when the tax is not applied to a transaction, select the Show On Receipt When Zero check box.

  4. Select the Rate TypeAmount, Percent, or Table.

United States locations typically select Percent.

International locations typically select Amount or Table.

  5. Enter the appropriate value for the Rate Type in the Amount or Percentage field, or select the required table from the Tax Table list.

If the restaurants in your area require multiple tax brackets (progressively higher sales tax rates for progressively higher sale amounts), these are set up in tax tables (discussed in Create a Tax Table).

  6. Click Select Categories.

  7. Select the categories that this rate should apply to in the Tax Category list.

Select All if this rate applies to all current tax categories as well as any new categories that may be created.

  8. Click the appropriate option in the Consumption Method list.

These options let you specify whether the tax or fee applies to eat-in orders (Eat In), take-out orders (Take Out), or both. If the tax or fee applies to both eat in and take out orders, then select both Eat In and Take Out in that Tax Category row.

  9. When you are finished, click Ok.

  10. Click Add Rate if there are any additional rates you need to apply to this tax.

  11. Click Add Tax/Fee to create an additional tax rate for your tax profile.

  12. Repeat for each remaining tax rate you need to define.

  13. Click Save.

A message appears to let you know that the tax profile you just made has been created successfully and assigned a numeric ID.

  14. Click OK.

The Tax Profiles screen lists the tax profile you created.
